Out and about, walks and beaches
There are many beautiful walks to be discovered. There is an excellent local map with details of walks in your welcome hamper, please return it before you leave so the next guests can enjoy it too. There are also many guide books and area maps in the map box – located at the West Wing Entrance fire place.
On the The National Trust website there are lots of guided walks. Some of our favourites are:
Mortehoe to Bull Point Light House
Baggy Point
Heddons Mouth Circular Walk
Watersmeet to Lynmouth
Beaches
Driving to Putsborough Beach: We are pleased to offer a pass for each apartment and up to two cars can visit the beach on one pass. Please take care not to lose the pass and ensure you leave it in the room on your departure.
Walking to Putsborough beach: There is a public footpath down to Putsborough beach, which can be walked to from the Manor (use the map in your welcome hamper)
To find the public footpath go down our drive and take a left at the road, keep walking, past the farm, round the sharp right hand bend and you will see a signpost for the ‘Coastal Path’ pointing left, before the giant grain barn. Follow the signs and they will take you down to the beach.
The walk down takes around 20-25 minutes but is steep (but with AMAZING views) so can prove tricky on the way back, especially with small children or lots of beach equipment, and may take more like 40-45 minutes.
To drive it takes 5 - 15 minutes depending on traffic in the lane but may take longer in peak season. You have a beach pass in your apartment for this beach. Please note there is NO access to the footpath through the West Woods as this is the neighbours private property.
At Putsborough beach there is a café, toilets and a great expanse of sand for volleyball, football, cricket and running. It also has great rock pools for younger children - We have plenty of beach games and buckets/spades etc to borrow in the surf store, next to the games room. (Please see GAMES ROOM AND SURF/BIKE STORE info).
Croyde Beach: Croyde Beach is more famous for surfing and is generally bigger for waves then Putsborough. It is about a 15 - 25 minute drive (depending on traffic), a 15 minute cycle or an hours walk (down to Putsborough and round Baggy point). It is a sandy beach but framed with rock pools on each side.
There are 2 car parks - a National Trust one which is free to members or around £6 per day, and a private car park called 'Down End Car Park' on the Saunton side which is pay and display. There are public toilets at the main entrance to the beach and at The Down End Car Park. Croyde village has lots of lovely cafes, pubs and surf shops about 10 minutes from the beach.
Other Beaches
Woolacombe and Saunton are both very long sandy beaches but with very little rock pooling access. Woolacombe has pubs and shops and is about a 20 minute drive with various car parks. Or you can walk down to Putsborough Beach and then it is 2 miles of golden sand to the Woolacombe end!
Saunton is miles of sandy beach backed by the Braunton Burrows and links round to Crow point complete with ship wreck and great for collecting driftwood. There are toilets and cafe onsite at Saunton but is a 15-20 minute drive depending on traffic.
Lee Bay: This is our favourite for rock pooling as it is almost all rock pools until low tide where you get a little patch of sand to swim and access to a hidden cove (perfect for playing pirates!). Currently, the car park is free but does get very full so we advise going early morning or tea time. There are public toilets up the lane towards the pub opposite the beach.
