Book & Writing Retreats
Set in a spectacular coastal location in North Devon, Pickwell Manor offers groups a quiet, inspiring place to read, write, reflect, and create.
Why Groups Choose Pickwell Manor
Sharing moments, meals, and meaningful time together
Peaceful, inspiring coastal setting ideal for creativity and concentration
A calm rhythm that supports reading, writing, discussion, reflection, and rest
Perfect for book clubs, writing circles, author retreats, study groups, and creative weekends
Beautiful interiors and natural surroundings that spark ideas and deepen focus
When you book a writing or literary retreat at Pickwell Manor, the main house becomes your creative home for the weekend. Affinity and Bliss, along with the Ballroom and the Snug, form the central hub of the manor and are always included with group stays, giving you exclusive and uninterrupted use of the main house. For larger writing groups or retreats with guest facilitators, Grace and the Chapel can be added, allowing you to host up to 27 participants with comfort and ease. This flexible layout supports both shared creative energy and the quiet personal space writers often need.
At the heart of the house is the Ballroom—a beautiful, light‑filled 45‑foot space that feels both inspiring and serene. It’s ideal for group workshops, morning writing sessions, readings, and communal meals. A cosy lounge area with a log fire at one end naturally draws writers together for evening discussions, brainstorming, or simply unwinding after a productive day.
Next door, the Snug serves as the communal kitchen—a relaxed space perfect for making coffee between sessions, preparing meals together, or taking mindful breaks throughout the day. Together, these spaces create an easy flow for writing retreats: areas for focus, areas for connection, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that supports creativity in all its stages.
“Pickwell is perfect for our annual long weekend away as a group of women who love to walk, talk, play crazy games and cook for ourselves. The beautiful and spacious apartments give us affordable luxury, with lots of extras and flexibility, as well as a versatile and well equipped communal area. We have already booked for 36 of us for next year…..our 6th consecutive autumn break”. Vicky Autumn , 2025 Guest.
